“Citizens for an Open and Honest Government” openly opposes Sheriff Charewicz’s re-election and feels he should not be Sheriff of Portage County.

Lloyd Pionkowski  has sent us a number of documents regarding some concerns he has regarding Sheriff Charewicz.    We have agreed to post a particular document on this site for view.  Citizens for an Open and Honest Government at this time is not trying to justify or condemn the actions of Mr. Pionkowski.  We do have concerns, however, with the action taken by Sheriff Charewicz. Our concerns are as follows.

·        The actions of Mr. Pionkowski mentioned by the sheriff in the second paragraph of his letter would not take place while working for his employer.    Thus the employer has no legal jurisdiction or power over the mentioned actions of his employee.  Thus this threat to remove this employer from the list is extremely out of line, if not illegal.

·        Separate and apart from the issues or problems Mr. Pionkowski has with the sheriff, he is well within his constitutional rights  to  seek and request public records and documents.

·        Separate and apart from the issues or problems Mr. Pionkowski has with the sheriff, he is also well within his rights to bring those concerns to the Attorney General, the Governor, or any other private or public official.

·        Separate and apart from the issues or problems Mr. Pionkowski has with the sheriff, the constitution still gives Mr. Pionkowski the right to voice his concerns and views publicly.

·        If Mr. Pionkowski slandered a deputy as the sheriff claims, there are legal recourses for that deputy to take against Mr. Pionkowski.  We see no legal right for the sheriff to use these tactics to force a Portage County resident to keep quiet.

·        We feel the sheriff’s letter contains threats and intimidation tactics against a local business.

·        This employer has no legal control over the situation.  We find this action is totally out of line and unprofessional, and we wonder why the sheriff would go to such questionable extremes to keep this man quiet.

·        We feel the sheriff is out of line in discrediting Mr. Pionkowski to his employer by mentioning his girlfriend’s supposed problems with the sheriff’s department.  Actually it appears from the second to the last paragraph that the problem seems to concern the sheriff’s campaign contributions and certain towing companies and not his girlfriend.

·       Unless the sheriff has actual proof, we feel the sheriff’s accusations in the third paragraph of the letter are nothing more than the sheriff’s speculations which inappropriately slander Mr. Pionkowski's character.

We have received a number of other complaints and documents from residents of Portage County regarding Sheriff Charewicz, and as we review these we will put them on this website.  Please keep in mind, not all the complaints received will be placed on this site. Some of these complaints involve names of businesses and people who may not want their issues publicized.
