PRESS RELEASE August 19, 2008

7th District Congressional candidate, Dan Mielke, receives endorsement.

Dan Mielke, the Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District, received an official endorsement from the 7th Congressional District of the Republican Party of Wisconsin on Saturday, August 16th, 2008.   According to Sean Duffy, Chair of the 7th Congressional District, this endorsement appears to be the first and only time, in his memory, that the 7th District has ever officially endorsed a congressional candidate.

Mielke, a local businessman and sustainable farmer in Portage County, is the only candidate running against the incumbent, David Obey in 2008.  Obey has served in Congress for 39 years, which Mielke feels is one of several reasons to remove him from office. “I don’t believe anyone can associate with lobbyists and other power players in Washington for 39 years without losing their perspective. We need congressmen who have lived and worked in the real world, so they can relate to the people and their concerns.”

Mielke is not your average Republican. He served as founding president of the Board of Directors for MOSA, a certifying agency which certifies about a 1000 organic farmers and processors throughout the Midwest and Canada.  For years, his family has used their vacation time working at The Upper Midwest Organic & Sustainable Farming Conference, which is held each year in LaCrosse, WI.   Mielke received a SARE grant for his research in finding ways for the small family farms to increase their profitability through the use of high tunnel agriculture, and he will be speaking on that issue at the 16th National Small Farm Trade Show & Conference™ November 6-8 being held in Columbia, Missouri two days after the election.  “God has given us a country to be proud of, and we need to work to keep it healthy and productive and free.” Mielke said.

“I am excited”, he said, “that the Republican Party has endorsed me.  This is a first for the Seventh District, and it shows their willingness to work with someone who wants to do what is best for our nation and world.”  Mielke is a strong supporter of creating a sustainable nation where we are not dependent on other nations to supply our necessities.   “To bring peace to the world and keep our environment clean, we must do our share to reduce our demand for foreign oil.  The world’s tension over oil would be greatly reduced if we could become sustainable and supply our own energy needs here at home.” He and his family have a history of supporting renewable & alternative energy. And, unlike Obey, Mielke is not opposed to drilling for oil.  “I would rather have an environmentally minded nation like America drill for oil than a country like China, which has a poor record of keeping the environment clean.”  Mielke reasons,  “Isn’t it better to build new and efficient refineries than to rely on old outdated ones that could pose environmental risks?  Isn’t it better to pipe our oil over land than to transport it in outdated oil tankers across the ocean from other countries putting our oceans at risk?   I am a firm believer in supplying local demand with local goods and services, when it is possible to do so.  It is time Congress works together for the good of the nation.  Remember, United we stand, divided we fall.”

Earlier press Release

The following was the press release that went out in March.

Organic/Sustainable farmer, businessman and citizen’s rights advocate Daniel Mielke announces that he is a candidate  for Wisconsin Congressional District 7

-- Mielke Vows to fight for Prosperity, Liberty, & Security --

Rudolph, Wisconsin – Sustainable farmer and local businessman, Daniel Mielke, announced he is running for US Congress in the Seventh District as a Republican candidate.  Democrat David Obey, has held the seat for 38 years. Obey is the longest standing member of Congress, which many feel is way too long for one person to be in office.

"I am running for Congress because it is time for a new voice, fresh ideas, and a leadership that is willing to put American prosperity, liberty and security above partisan politics," stated Dan Mielke. “ It’s time that we quit fighting like children and get to the job at hand, which is working for America and her citizens. After 38 years in office, Congressman Obey has gotten off track and can’t get past his prejudices and hatred towards those who don’t agree with his way of doing things.”   Mielke believes that as long as we are divided against ourselves, we cannot protect the country and its interests and freedoms.  “This bickering and fighting across party lines is destroying this nation and our future,” Mielke said.   Obey has come under fire in the last few years for his explosive outbursts which have earned him the title  “The Great Mount Obey” from those in Congress.  Mielke says  “Obey might have started off  “Raising Hell for Justice”, (the title of his new book) but now, it seems, he is just a man raising hell.”

Mielke is not new to politics; he has a long history of raising his own “hell for justice”.   He was a key player in the fight for the protection of property rights during the Smart Growth/Comprehensive planning process, which the state began in 1999.  It was Mielke who took on the task and successfully forced Portage County through a binding referendum to have an Elected Executive position instead of an un-elected County Administrator.   His wife is the treasurer for Citizens for an Open and Honest Government, which explains the  basis for many of Mielke’s battles.  This political action committee has been active in encouraging citizens to run for public office under the premise that elections should offer a choice of candidates verses incumbents running unchallenged.   Many incumbents have lost their seats through his efforts, and Obey could be the next.

Mielke has a history in the organic and sustainable farming industry.  Besides being a farmer himself, he also was the founding president of the board for Midwest Organic Services Association, which certifies over 1000 organic farmers and processing plants throughout the US.  Mielke also received a USDA SARE Grant for his research in High Tunnel Agriculture.  He also sat on the USDA SARE Grant Review Committee for three years.  Mielke’s business experience goes beyond farming.   He & his wife have owned and operated numerous businesses in the following fields: construction, house moving, arboriculture, woodworking, assessing, and food service.

“I learned early on in life that people can have different goals and ideas and still work together for the good of all.  Our nation was built on a sustainable/self sufficient mentality, and I believe we can return to that stable condition once again, if we rally behind the cause.  It is a sad state of affairs when we see the foundation of our country exported like a commodity.  There is something wrong when we see our industry leaving this nation and the jobs that are left being filled by those who are not even US citizens.  We must secure our industry, jobs and resources,” Mielke said.    “I hope for the day when Republicans, Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and Constitutionalists can come together on this issue and establish an economically strong nation with a foundation that will keep us alive for centuries to come.   If we don’t, we will find our nation indebted to others and our valuable resources, jobs, industry and prosperity gone.”

Dan Mielke, 54, and his wife and business partner, Robin, are the parents of three adult children, Andrea and Amy, who own and operate Mielke’s Fiber Arts, and a son, Adam, who is attending the University of Stevens Point and has recently entered the military.
